After years of eating instant oatmeal (reduced-sugar, in my defense), I've converted to real oatmeal. That's because I've finally figured out how to make it, what yummy stuff to add to it, and how much sugar to put in. I know, it's not hard to make, but the consistency was never right. But I've got the measurements and the timing down now, and with some flax seed, blueberries, almonds and a bit more sugar than I was putting in before, it's YUMMY. There's no going back for me.
Now I've got to get my son on the same page.

The ratio of water to oatmeal is 2:1. The recipes all say to use milk for a creamier texture but that has never worked for me. I bring it to a boil, let it simmer for 5 minutes, then turn off the heat and let it sit for another 4 or 5 minutes -- it's this sitting part that changed the consistency for me. While it's simmering I add some frozen blueberries and a tablespoon of ground flax seed. Right before serving I add a handful of slivered almonds.
Then a splash of milk and a healthy spoonful of brown sugar, and I'm set.
You're making me hungry!
Thank you...will try it in the morning. I wonder if by adding the nuts I might entice Meghan to eat it. It doesn't ever look all that appetizing, so both my kids won't even try it. They devour the "Dino Egg" version of the instant stuff, but put candy in anything, and they're going to eat it! Just what lengths am I willing to go to, to get them to eat oatmeal?
Please? May I have some more?
I'll second that, EMD. I need help. I did a secret pact with myself months ago to try eating Oatmeal every morning. I quit almost as soon as I started. The kids won't eat it, so I end up throwing out a lot. I also have trouble with the consistency, and am not sure how much stuff to add.
And almonds?! I've never heard of that. Sliced or whole?
So, yes, please. More details!

So, what are the secret ingredients and measurements?
